Sound familiar?

You've tried everything — except knowing

Most gut problems get treated by trial and error: a new food, another supplement, one more vet visit. Testing replaces the guesswork with your dog's actual data.

Recurring diarrhoea

Soft stools that clear up for a week — then come straight back.

Vomiting & acid reflux

Grass-eating, gulping, early-morning sickness with no obvious trigger.

Itching, licking, chewing

Paws, ears and skin that flare up no matter what you change.

Food sensitivities

Elimination diets that never quite find the culprit.

Anxious, reactive behaviour

The gut–brain axis means behaviour and digestion are linked.

Vet bills that keep coming

Treating the symptom, again and again, without finding the cause.

The cost of guessing

Trial and error is the expensive route

The guesswork route The PetBiome route
Food Elimination diets, one bag at a time Changes guided by your dog's actual bacteria
Supplements Trial-and-error tubs you may not need Only what the results call for
Vet time Repeat visits for the same symptom A report your vet can act on
Time to answers Months — sometimes years 2–4 weeks from the lab
Cost Keeps adding up, month after month £180, once
One test can cost less than a single month of guesswork.
What a balanced biome can change

When the gut is right, everything follows

An imbalanced microbiome is linked to itchy skin, gastric discomfort and food sensitivities. Testing shows exactly where the imbalance lies — so it can be corrected, not guessed at.

Calmer digestion

Pinpoint the bacterial imbalances behind diarrhoea, vomiting and acid reflux.

Healthier skin & coat

Uncover the gut-level drivers of itchiness, allergies and sensitivities.

More energy

A stable microbiome supports healthy digestion — and the vitality that comes with it.

Better balance

Emerging gut–brain axis research links the microbiome to mood and behaviour.

From a simple stool sample to a complete, personalised picture of your dog's gut health.

Step 1

Collect the sample

A simple, stress-free stool sample at home. No vet visits, no invasive procedures. Return box and postage included.

Step 2

Lab sequencing

Your sample is genomically sequenced at the Aberystwyth University laboratory using 16S rRNA analysis.

Step 3

Personalised report

Your dog's biome is benchmarked against thousands of dogs to identify patterns and imbalances. Results in 2–4 weeks.

Step 4

Practical recommendations

Clear, science-led diet and supplement guidance built from your dog's own results — no guesswork.

Step 5

Optional consultation

Book a one-to-one with the team to walk through your report and build a plan together.

Step 6

Retest whenever you're ready to see the change on paper — progress you can measure, not just notice.

Inside the PetBiome report

What you'll discover about your dog

Not a score out of ten — a full, scientifically interpreted picture of your dog's gut, and exactly what to do with it. Here's what the real report looks like.

The details

Everything you'll receive

What's in the kit
A sample collection tube with easy instructions and return packaging, research-grade DNA sequencing of your sample, and a detailed, scientifically interpreted PetBiome report covering bacterial balance and diversity, dysbiosis patterns, inflammatory and metabolic markers, plus practical diet and supplement guidance — with ongoing support from the microbiome team.
How the science works
We use 16S rRNA genomic sequencing — DNA is extracted from the stool sample, amplified, sequenced, and compared against reference genomes. Your dog's profile is then benchmarked against Europe's largest pet microbiome database of over 10,000 dogs and cats.
How to collect the sample
Collect a fresh stool sample using the kit provided, seal it in the return box, and post it back to us — everything you need is included. If your dog has recently had antibiotics, wait four weeks before testing so medication doesn't affect accuracy.
Your PetBiome Report
A personalised, plain-English report identifying the bacteria in your dog's gut, where imbalances lie, and science-led dietary and supplement recommendations. Reports are continuously updated as new research emerges.

Why genomic sequencing

Not all microbiome tests are equal

Most competitors rely on limited PCR panels. PetBiome uses full genomic sequencing — and Europe's largest pet microbiome database.

Feature Typical PCR test PetBiome Your benefit
Method PCR panel 16S rRNA genomic sequencing A far more complete picture of the gut
Benchmark database Limited 10,000+ dogs & cats — Europe's largest Results compared against real, relevant pets
Report Static Continuously updated with new research Advice that stays current
Interpretation Generic Team of professional animal microbiologists Expert eyes on your dog's results
Aftercare None Optional consultation + monthly custom powders A plan, not just a PDF
Comprehensive insight

One test. Whole-body understanding.

The gut microbiome influences far more than digestion. Your dog's report covers the systems that matter.

Digestion

Diarrhoea, vomiting and acid reflux traced back to specific bacterial imbalances.

Immune system

The gut is central to immune regulation and your dog's natural defences.

Skin & coat

Itchy skin and dull coats are frequently rooted in gut imbalance.

Allergies & sensitivities

Identify the food sensitivities and intolerances driving reactions.

Inflammation

Chronic inflammation and IBD-type issues, understood at the source.

Weight & metabolism

Obesity and metabolic issues managed through targeted diet changes.

Mood & behaviour

Anxiety and reactivity, viewed through the gut–brain axis.

Energy & vitality

Healthy digestion means better nutrient absorption — and more energy.

Long-term wellbeing

Retesting tracks your dog's biome over time, so progress is proven.

One simple stool sample. A complete, science-led picture of your dog's health.

Meet Dr Carol Hughes

Founder and Microbiologist at Biome4Pets. With a passion for turning complex microbiome science into practical answers, Carol leads our research and ever-evolving understanding of what's really happening inside our dogs' guts.

Biome4Pets began in 2018, after four years of intensive research into the pet microbiome. Carol kept seeing the same story: devoted owners guessing their way through diets, supplements and elimination trials, while the real answer sat in the gut all along.

The PetBiome test is where that work starts for every dog: one simple sample, sequenced properly, read by people who know exactly what they're looking at.
