I did something recently that thousands of dog owners probably do every day. I typed “supplements for my dog with itchy skin” into Google.
Straight away, I was presented with product after product, with the first few options costing anywhere from around £20 to nearly £50. They all appeared to be offering a solution to broadly the same problem: an itchy dog.
But when I started looking beyond the front of the packet and actually compared the ingredients, something became very obvious.
They were all very different.
Some contained probiotics and prebiotics. Others included fish oils and omega-3 fatty acids. There were products containing quercetin, turmeric, psyllium, inulin, pectin, chicory fibre, apple cider vinegar, flaxseed, pumpkin seed, vitamins, minerals and various botanical ingredients.
They are all being sold to owners searching for help with an itchy dog, but they aren't actually doing the same thing.
Which raises a very simple question:
How are you supposed to know which one YOUR dog needs?
This is one of the biggest problems with choosing supplements based purely on symptoms.
Two dogs can both be incredibly itchy and have completely different things happening inside their bodies.
One may be struggling with environmental allergies. Another may have a dietary sensitivity. Another may have experienced repeated courses of antibiotics. Another may have an altered intestinal microbial ecosystem. And for many dogs, there may be several factors occurring simultaneously.
They all present to their owners in much the same way: scratching, licking, chewing paws, irritated skin or recurring flare-ups.
Yet we walk into a shop or search online and are expected to select a supplement based largely on the symptom written on the front of the packet.
“Itchy dog? Give this.”
But what does your dog's microbiome actually look like?
That is the question we think should come first.
Probiotics are a perfect example
Several of the products I found contained probiotics.
We have become accustomed to hearing that probiotics are “good for the gut”, so adding beneficial bacteria sounds perfectly logical.
But your dog's intestine already contains an enormous and incredibly complex microbial ecosystem.
Before adding more bacteria, surely it makes sense to understand what is already there.
Does your dog have good microbial diversity? Are important beneficial bacterial populations depleted? Are certain organisms dominating the microbiome? Are there patterns associated with inflammation or digestive instability? Is the microbiome showing good resilience, or has it become significantly disrupted?
Without testing, you simply don't know.
And exactly the same principle applies to prebiotics.
Prebiotics aren't bacteria. They provide substrates that bacteria already living within the intestine can use.
That means the effect of feeding a particular prebiotic depends, at least partly, on which bacteria are already present to ferment it.
So simply asking whether prebiotics are good for dogs misses the point.
The more useful question is:
Is this particular type of microbiome support appropriate for this particular dog?
Then we need to talk about food
This is arguably where things become even more interesting.
Owners can spend considerable amounts of money every month trying different supplements while continuing to feed exactly the same diet.
But food is one of the major influences on the intestinal microbiome.
Different dietary components provide different substrates for microbial fermentation. Protein, fats, fibres, resistant starches and plant compounds all interact differently with the microbial ecosystem.
This is why generic advice such as “feed more fibre”, “add vegetables”, “try a probiotic” or “give fermented foods”can only take us so far.
The advice may be perfectly reasonable for one dog but inappropriate for another.
If we can see that particular beneficial bacterial populations are depleted, our strategy can focus on supporting them. If other populations have become disproportionately abundant, we can look at the dietary environment that may be helping sustain that imbalance.
Suddenly, we're no longer randomly adding things to the dog's bowl.
We have a reason for what we're doing.
This is the difference between testing and guessing
At Biome4Pets, we don't believe the value of a microbiome test lies in giving you pages of bacterial names and percentages.
Numbers without interpretation aren't particularly useful to the average dog owner.
We want to understand what those numbers mean.
We've now analysed the microbiomes of more than 10,000 dogs, creating an ever-growing canine microbiome database.
When we analyse your dog's sample, we're therefore not simply looking at bacteria in isolation. We're able to examine the microbial pattern in the context of thousands of other canine microbiomes.
We look at diversity and species richness, the balance between major bacterial populations, important organisms that are unusually elevated or depleted, fermentation patterns and bacterial groups involved in maintaining intestinal health.
And because our database continues to grow, our understanding continues to evolve.
Every dog we test adds another piece to the picture.
That's fundamentally different from taking a result, running it through a static set of rules and producing a list of high and low bacteria.
Biology isn't static.
The microbiome certainly isn't static.
And our interpretation of it shouldn't be either.
More than a list of bacteria
The purpose of testing is to turn incredibly complicated microbiome data into information an owner can actually use.
We want you to finish reading your dog's report understanding what is happening inside their gut, where the important imbalances are and what practical steps can be taken to support a healthier microbial ecosystem.
That can include targeted microbiome support alongside guidance about dietary components and foods that may help encourage beneficial bacterial populations, as well as foods or substrates that may be less appropriate for the microbiome profile identified.
Instead of starting with:
“My dog is itchy. Which supplement should I buy?”
We can start with:
“My dog is itchy. What is actually happening inside their gut?”
Those are two very different approaches.
Supplements aren't the problem
This isn't an argument that supplements don't work or that the products appearing on Google are somehow inherently bad.
Quite the opposite.
Many contain potentially useful ingredients.
The problem is that those ingredients have different purposes.
Omega-3 fatty acids aren't doing the same job as a probiotic. A probiotic isn't the same thing as a prebiotic. Psyllium isn't the same as inulin. Quercetin isn't interchangeable with pectin.
So asking “Which itchy dog supplement is best?” may be the wrong question.
A better question is:
“Which type of support is appropriate for my dog?”
And to answer that properly, it helps to know what you're actually dealing with.
How much do we spend guessing?
This is the other side of the equation.
Buy a £30 supplement and try it for a couple of months.
Nothing changes, so you buy another.
Then perhaps you change the food.
Then somebody recommends a probiotic.
Someone else suggests a different prebiotic.
Then another supplement appears on Instagram that has fantastic reviews.
Before long, you've spent considerably more than the cost of investigating the gut in the first place — and because you've changed so many things, you may have no idea which intervention helped, which did nothing and which potentially made things worse.
This is why we believe in a much simpler principle:
Measure. Understand. Then intervene.
A microbiome test isn't about finding another product to give your dog.
It's about giving you information that can help you make better decisions about what you put into them.
Because two dogs can have exactly the same symptom and completely different microbiomes.
And if the underlying biology is different, why would we automatically give them the same supplement?
Stop guessing what's happening inside your dog's gut. Test it.
